• QWK error message question

From Rixter@VERT/RICKSBBS to All on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 10:03:16
I have a QWK caller that cannot send QWK .rep or received message packets all of the sudden. In my log this is the report I am seeing.

    4/15 08:49:25a 7568 <TLQWK> logged off

I have not made any changes related to QWK on my BBS in a long time. Is there something I need to adjust or does the other BBS trying to send and receive QWK from my BBS need to make some changes?

    Thank you,

This would be an FTP issue, not really specifically a "QWK" issue. It appears they're using the old "active" (not passive) FTP transfer mode and having issues (likely on their end). The Synchronet qnet-ftp script (e.g. qnet-ftp.js) uses *passive* FTP by default, so ask them if they changed that setting or what's going on on their end. They can test FTP functionality by simply logging in with any FTP client and toggling between passive/active modes and do directory listings.

It turns out it is my BBS causing the problem. I truly do no understand what happened. It was working fine. The only thing I had updated was rlogin.js to the most current version. It was the day after I did this that my QWK hub stopped receiving replies and sending out QWK replies to those using my QWK Hub. Is there something I am supposed to add to modopts.ini or the qnet-ftp.js to allow people to send replies to the QWK Hub and download message packets? Here is a copy of one of the logs from the caller wanting to download from my hub.

notice the subject to NAT notice. Is that a problem or just part of the normal communciations?

Its the same for the other bbs's trying to get their packets and send replies. I am at a loss to understand what suddenly happened. It was working fine up until I upgraded the old rlogin.js. That came with 3.19b I do not see how that could change anything relating to the QWK network, but that was the only thing I have changed. If someone is calling into my HUB would the %s be needed from their end setup? In the SCFG QWK command for callout *qnet-ftp %s ricksbbs.synchro.net password should they leave the %s out? Do I need to define my ip address numbers somewhere or my address name (ricksbbs.synchro.net) somewhere else? Is there something I am supposed to modify in modopts.ini to be a HUB? It really was working just fine up until I updated rlogin.js, It must have just been a coincidence. Right? I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you

It was the day after I did this that my QWK hub stopped receiving replies and sending out QWK replies to those using my QWK Hub.

When you say "my QWK hub" - what exactly do you mean? If you're running your own QWK network, then *your* BBS *is* the hub. You don't "have" a hub, you "are" the hub.

Is there something I am supposed to add to modopts.ini or the

No. qnet-ftp.js is for QWKnet *nodes*.

    That's normal.

%s be needed from their end setup? In the SCFG QWK command for callout *qnet-ftp %s ricksbbs.synchro.net password should they leave the %s out?

The %s would be replaced with the hub's QWK-ID (*your* BBS-ID if you're the hub). It's needed.

    Do
I need to define my ip address numbers somewhere or my address name (ricksbbs.synchro.net) somewhere else?

    No.

Is there something I am supposed to modify in modopts.ini to be a HUB?

You *can* enable the 'ask_qnet' option in the [newuser] section of your ctrl/modopts.ini file if you want new users to be asked if they're a QWKnet node and be automatically given the Q-restriction. But it's not strictly required.

It really was working just fine up until
I updated rlogin.js, It must have just been a coincidence. Right?

    Right.

I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you

It looks like you have an FTP problem, not a QWK problem. Can these other sysops FTP to your system and get directory listings in either passive or active FTP mode? qnet-ftp.js uses passive FTP mode by default, so that'd be the most important mode to test and make sure is working.

    Thank you Digital man,

I got on an MRC chat and stingray, amessyroom, and myself tracked it down to where I needed to open more ports for passive connections and it works fine now. I also defined my public ip in sbbs.ini. Thank you for addressing all my concerns. What a coincidence though about updating rlogin.js and the next day my qwk failed. You are awesome. Synchronet is awesome. Have a great day sir.
