I still type pico just automatically when wanting to read/edit a file. With garuda and manjaro, I've had to setup an alias for "edit" and "pico" to poin

Speaking of muscle memory, whenever I'm typing in a different editor like nano or notepad or whatever, I always end up with a stray "h", "j", "k", or "l" (the "arrow" keys in vi). What sucks more is when these habits kick in while writing long emails in Outlook. In vi, I would finish by hitting Esc to get out of edit mode and then typing ":wq" to write out and quit. Well, in Outlook, hitting Esc brings up "Are you sure you want to abort?", then the ":wq" does nothing, but pressing enter after that does the Yes/Ok on the dialog box! And there goes my long ass email that I now have to remember and type all over again.

Not on super old vi that comes with Solaris 2.x or various other OSes :). While I started out using vi with arrow keys, I made myself get used to hjkl as I found myself logging into those commercial OSes for work.

Ah, then I probably first learned vi back in the late '80s using hjkl as well, but my fingers have since lost the habit. I switch between multiple IDEs and editors many times a day (just about) every day, so I don't even really think about it anymore, my subconscious just remembers to hit the right keys (usually). :-)

Yeah, nano for the win for me too. If you have been using vi for years, no biggie... but nano is great for the unintiated.

agreed, nano is just easier for most people. But I do know some old unix or linux dudes that have been using vi since it's inception, and are wired for vi. I always have to look up the commands if I use it.

I know what you mean :). I was used to all the Wordstar 2000 key shortcuts and even had a printout that went over my XT keyboard to show what was what. I think I just had it because it looked cool to me, since I never really had to look at it.

"Vim" stands for "vi improved" - it's kind of the modern successor to 'vi' (the original "visual" text editor for Unix). The version of vim installed by default on Debian Linux (and I assume Ubuntu Linux) is "vim-tiny" (a minimal install with a subset of features) and you'll want to install the 'vim' package to get the normal/full set of vi/vim features.

Neovim is another variant of 'vi' that's popular (I assume there are others). --

Yes I did, I'm on Disability now. I was an Extruder Technician then Building Maintenance. Some Hard A$$ Work. We like to visit Blue Ridge when we have time.
