When I was in college, the administration used to have a lottery system
for which food vendors got to do breakfast, who'd do lunch, etc.

There was a place called the "Bark n' Bun" which, miraculously got a
breakfast slot. They hurriedly arranged for bagels, muffins, coffee and
juice, but always had their "usual" special on the menu.

    Jolt and a hot dog.

    Breakfast of champions!

Normally I'm not big on a lot of bread at breakfast.. I used to often eat cereal for breakfast in the morning, though in recent years, I've been buying frozen breakfast items (such as egg/sausage/cheese breakfast sandwiches & such) and taking them to work to heat & eat. Also, the company I'm working at now has a cafe that makes breakfast & lunch for emploeyes for decent prices. They have breakfasts that cost between $3.50 and $5 that aren't bad - you can get a breakfast with 2 eggs, hash brown, and sausage (2 links or a patty) for $4.50, and I think it's not bad for the price.

Not sure how it'd make you go blind, it's just like drinking 2 cokes. Modern day energy drinks have more nowadays.

My daughter now likes that brand of Yerba Mate that comes in a yellow can. Interesting, I thought - I drank a lot of Mate in the 2000s, steeped from loose leaves. Mateine is a stimulant in Mate that doesn't cause the same jitters that caffeine does.

Then, I looked at the can. It's got tons of sugar and added caffeine! Makes no sense.

Cold pizza sounds disgusting, but the reality is far better. I often just add some extra tomato sauce (what you Americans call Ketchup) on the pizza, so its not quite as dry.

I'd probably eat anything for breakfast (and I have had things like pizza, leftover Thai food, and other leftovers for breakfast sometimes), but I do like more traditional things like eggs, sausage, and hash browns. And I do think McDonalds makes good breakfast food - I usually go for their sausage & egg McMuffin, hash brown, and vanilla iced coffee (the sugar-free version these days). At home, I have a toaster with a poacher so I can make similar breakfast sandwiches at home if I want (and I've found Wal-Mart's sausage patties taste very similar to McDonalds sausage patties), but I also like making omlettes and scrambled eggs at home.

Although I tend to like pizza with a lot of toppings (what some places call a 'combination', with things like salami, sausage, onion, green pepper, olives, etc.), Hawaiian is one of my favorite kinds of pizza.

Years ago, at my first job (at a Dairy Queen), one time a co-worker was ordering pizza for us, and he was asking what kind we like. Sounds similar to what we call tomato sauce. We use it for chips and pies. I'm guessing there are subtle variations, and our version perhaps isn't as sweet. I find American versions of things to generally be sweeter and stronger (bread, sauces, etc)

I've made a similar argument before (some people say they don't want fruit in salad), but people might say I'm being nitpicky. And there's apparently the botanical classification vs. culinary usage - A tomato is a fruit by botanical classification, but many people consider it a vegetable by culinary usage.

And the LORD did sayeth unto Japheth, "Why didst thou forsake the memory of the Romans and put pineapple on thy Pizza?". And Japheth did hide his face in shame, because he knew that fruit on Pizza was an abomination unto the LORD. For thy God has provided the bounty of the tropics and the grain for creating leavened bread, but in His holy wisdom has kept these apart. Let no man bringeth them together.

pineapple on pizza should be punishable by death.

IMO, ketchup on pizza sounds gross. And what we consider tomato sauce is no ketchup.

Ketchup in Europe is so crazy different. It LOOKS like our crappiest ketchups, but it TASTES better than anything we have in the stores. My theory is the tomatoes there are a thousand times better and there
isn't as much vinegar in it.

I get to have week of eating food in Europe next month. I think the benefit is less high fluclose corn syrup and other garbage like red 40 in their food supply. I just have to avoid drinking stuff like Dr.Pepper in England. Dr.Pepper is garbage over there.

overs. So a bit of sauce, bit of chilli, to mask the sweetness of the pineapple.

Salty things are good with pineapple, like anchovies or spam or maybe salami

I've heard people say that, but I find the contrast in flavours a bit jarring. One tastes like it "doesn't belong". Perhaps I have a simple palate, but I'm sensetive to taste, and to something that 'doesn't belong', whether it is something sweet in a savoury dish (I don't like pineapple in hamburgers either), or something salty in something sweet, like salted caramel.

Botanically it is a fruit, but in the culinary world it is a vegetable because of its flavour profile. As we are using it in a culinary context, its flavour is a more appropriate way to classify it than due to it having seeds and coming from a flower.

It's all preference. Put what you want on your pizza, and don't give others flak for putting what they want on theirs. You don't have to eat their pizza, they do.

Yeah, I've never really understood why pineapple on pizza is such a big
    ebate
for some people. Just let people eat what they like to eat.

I suspect the adversion to this comes from when people are younger and
don't have as much of a choice as to what they eat... eat was is served or don't eat. When you have a younger sibling who insists on pineapple on
pizza and usually gets their way, it makes you pretty dead set against it

Yeah, I'm finding it hard to think of a Bulgarian thing that is sweet and savory... There's a red pepper spread/sauce called 'lyutenitza' that's a little bit sweet and gets put on meat (often for kids). Also, sugar gets put on egg bread. That's about as close as I can think of, though.

I've never seen chocolate covered peanuts at a movie theater. But I imagine theaters in different places probably serve different things. Movie theaters in my area do often sell boxed candy, and you could probably find some selling peanut M&Ms here. But theaters often sell that stuff at high prices. One thing people do sometimes is buy that stuff at a store before going to the theater. Some Wal-Mart stores and dollar stores here even have a section of the candy aisle called 'movie theater candy' or similar.

Yeah, I feel like there's often a difference between sandwich shop mayo and jarred mayo you buy at the store.

I think mayonnaise is one of those things that's not great by itself, and it needs to be in (or with) another food to be good.

    What is 'egg bread'?

    The Slavic/Balkan one is called
    "kozunak" or "cozonac". Kinda sweet-ish
bread made with dry yeast, sugar, egg,

Yeah, I'm finding it hard to think of a Bulgarian thing that is sweet

I put it in a sandwich press (like a waffle iron, but flat) to heat it.

I do have a small George Forman grill, which is like a SP. How long do you "press" it?

Until its hot in the middle. Usually takes only a minute or so from a defrosted
state, maybe an extra minute or so if already frozen. It will make the top and bottom crispier, and of course, flatten the pizza, but to me that a feature. Works well on pizza with a lot of toppings, like we have in Australia. Might not work well for a cheese and pepperoni pizza or other 'thin' pizzas. I usually get pizza with the lot, so its plenty thick and won't stick, but a margherita? The sandwich press might make a mess of that.

I've never seen chocolate covered peanuts at a movie theater.

They are called Goobers and, along with Raisinettes, were a movie theatre stapple when I used to attend theatres. I don't know what they sell at the refreshment counters these days as I've not been to a movie since before COVID... I think the last time I went was in 2015.

Getting a box of Goobers and a soda before the movie was a treat as a kid.

    But I imagine
theaters in different places probably serve different things. Movie theaters in my area do often sell boxed candy, and you could probably find some selling
    peanut M&Ms here.

They normally sold those, too. The difference is that Goobers don't have a candy coating on the outside, just chocolate.

Fried bread? I've had that in England. Grilled cheese here, is cheese on bread, perhaps the bread is already toasted, put into the grill. The grill cooks the cheese from above, it melts, and becomes heaven on leavened bread.
Of course, you can put other things under the cheese, but its literally grilled.

This discussion would be better served on the usenet group free.toast, the place to discuss all things toast and cooked bread. The stranger thing is, its one of the more active Usenet groups!

There are some theaters in my area like that too. I went to one of them a couple times, and I liked it, although I think the food & beer service at the tables could be a distraction if I really want to pay attention to the movie.

They had a stage, I was surprised they didn't do Rocky Horror shows.

Dammit, Janet, those were fun! it was a long-standing tradition at sci-fi cons I used to attend, we'd all "do the time warp" at the Saturday night dance at Midnight.

well it's called grilled cheese but it's not really grilled. you never had o you butter bread on both sides and brown it in a skillet. with tomato soup it's the perfect comfort food.
you dip it in the soup.

It's actually true, and VERY good. Sweet and savory in one bite. An English muffin (w/ Kerrygold butter), with black coffee and OJ on the
    side for the ultimate experience.

How do you prepare the SPAM? Do you fry it first?

Sometimes, but not often. My preferred way is to broil it in a toaster
oven. I cut the spam into 6-8 slices (roughly 1/4 to 5/16" thick) and
broil them on a rack in a shallow pan, flipping over once to get both
sides crispy. Then take out and put on a plate with a paper towel to
soak the grease up a little. It's delicious. Goes well with eggs and
    rice, too.

The sandwich press might make a mess of that.

I thought about that. Probably need a deep-dish crust to make it work right. Unfortunately, the place I get my pizzas don't have that option, but they do load it up with meaty goodness; still worth a shot.

they say if you put pizza in a pan and put an icecube in there and cover it , that's the best way to heat it up. it steams it all over.

Same here, except I stopped in 2019, only because they closed down the theater I went to. I had been a regular there since the '80s.

Getting a box of Goobers and a soda before the movie was a treat as a kid.

Wasn't bad as an adult either. I was there so often, I didn't even have to tell them what I wanted. They'd see me in line and have it ready to go when I got to the counter. They were a good buncb.

i think the last movie i went to was an avengers movie. i dont like going to the theaters because i'm by someone who smells bad or is making noise or on their phone

I never really tried mayo with chips (fries), until I went to Europe, where it is standard there. Once I tried it there, I was sold. As long as its a nice creamy mayo, I prefer that with chips than tomato sauce now. Kewpie mayo is the best, the closest to what the Europeans use.

Sometimes, but not often. My preferred way is to broil it in a
toaster oven. I cut the spam into 6-8 slices (roughly 1/4 to 5/16"
thick) and broil them on a rack in a shallow pan, flipping over once
to get both sides crispy. Then take out and put on a plate with a
paper towel to soak the grease up a little. It's delicious. Goes
well with eggs and rice, too.

I imagine it probably has about the same texture (and maybe even
somewhat taste) as smoked or grilled bologna logs?

Probably similar, maybe a little more firm, depending on how long you
    cook it.

I may have to try it. Camping season is coming up soon, and we try to
get as creative as possible when it comes to cooking outdoors.

It's perfect for camping. Another way I like it is to cube it up fairly small, brown that up pretty well, and mix in with Mac-n-Cheese, or even spaghetti/elbows in spaghetti sauce.

I usually just rinse the block off under hot water and the jelly goes

I wouldn't recommend that as, over time, can clog up your drain. Best to wipe if off with paper towels, then pitch the towels.

Yeah, sliced and fried is my normal mode of consumption. That and a slice of cheese makes a yummy sandwich.

I visited Germany in 1998, and I thought it was interesting that McDonald's serves beer in Germany.

In Germany, people drink 1 or 2 beers with lunch! But they don't overdue
    it...

My favorites while I was there (7 years) were Wheat (Weizen) pils and Doppelbock (double strong - I think).

Weizen beer is brewed with more wheat than barley and it's very bubbly,
    and sort of light tasting.

Doppelbock on the other hand is very dark and strong. Watch out if you
drink this type (doesn't matter what brand).

And of course there is a brewery in every town!

Most of the Chuck E Cheese's around here have shut down, probably because of the same kinds of baffoonery.

That wouldn't make good business sense. Better to simply cut out the sale of alchohol than close down an entire business.

According to various articles, the main reasons CEC has less outlets is COVID, large debt to creditors and shift in customer preferences, in that order.

Might be. Or it could be that they still make a great product that lasts, so they're not selling enough of them. I replaced mine about 10 years ago, and it's still running just fine.

well they are building tons new homes every year. i'm not so sure they're being put in new homes. i'm not really a supporter of shredding up solid food and putting it down the pipes. i'm more of a fan of compost or throwing it in a landfill.

insinkerator was owned by emerson which is a huge company. whirlpool owns it now. not sure how they are doing now.

Most of the Chuck E Cheese's around here have shut down, probably because of the same kinds of baffoonery.

That wouldn't make good business sense. Better to simply cut out the sale of alchohol than close down an entire business.

yeah it's not because of alcohol. people are keeping their kids at home.
    also times are hard.

According to various articles, the main reasons CEC has less outlets is COVID, large debt to creditors and shift in customer preferences, in that order.

yeah that sounds about right. in my old city they are also a ghost kitchen on doordash.

With a single sink, yes. If you have a double sink with a disposal on
one side and regular drain on the other, they seem to clog all the
time at the trap. Luckily, mine had a screw-in cleanout so I didn't
need to take the plumbing apart.

I have this same setup... dual sinks with 1 insinkerator. In 20 years it has never clogged up although the motor finally died last year and I had to replace it. I always run LOTS of water when I use it though.

it stopped being a magical place for kids.

I'd imagine kids will still have fun at these places, but when a parent goes through $20 for the kid to play only a few games, the fun is over and it's time to leave. When I was a kid, I could go hours at an arcade with only $5. Now, you need to basically take out a second mortgage on your house in order for your kids to have fun for a little while.

To be honest, my bucket list contains going to Germany for an Oktoberfest. I love brats and beer. What more could you ask for? ;)

That's something I've thought about doing too. I actually live near a town that puts on a pretty good Oktoberfest each year (Mt. Angel, OR, which I heard was settled by German immigrants), but from what I've heard and seen, it seems like the Oktoberfest events in Germany are pretty epic.

Diced up and fried with diced potatos, onions and green peppers...

Now I'm hungry. I think a good white sause would go well with that.

isn't mayo just egg and oil whipped?

I think it is, but they either may use a different proportion or add
spices or sugar. It definitely tasted different than the regular
Hellman's or whatever brand locally in the US.

It's kind of eye opening to see how many different preservatives and chemicals are added to US foodstuffs in comparison to the same items in other countries.

if we didn't have preservatives people would cry about the higher prices and how their food would spoil.

I live in a rural area. All of my waste water goes into a septic tank.
    So I don't have a garbage disposal simply because I don't think it's a
good idea (jmo). I haven't ever had a garbage disposal in my sink. Maybe
I'm just a hick? Or not the usual domesticate.

Just wondering, if that stuff would clog up your drain - what would it do
to your arteries? Just like Andy Rooney. Didja ever wonder why...

i wonder if it causes a lot of problems with wastewater treatment systems.
from what i looked up, it's no bueno for septic systems or even city waste treatment plants.

it's just better to compost and composting can be fun. just go in the back yard and make a compost pile.

disposal, if possible. If only one basin, put your silverware to the side of the sink or in some kind of rack or basket.

People like them just like they like anything that makes things/life easier, when used properly.

    Regards,

if you have a yard just do composting. it's fun.

That could very well be because now they're owned by Whirlpool. That seems to happen quite a bit.

Local homegrown company does real good, owners/boards sell it off for huge profit to a big umbrella company that doesn't give a shit about their product or their people, etc. Company takes a dive.. ;)

well it was owned by emmerson for quite a while. emmerson does tons of stuff.
i worked pt at a foundry on the weekends for an emmerson plant in s milwaukee. they made castings for electrical boxes, etc.

Makes dishes and cleanup easier for the people that do use it. Not using them is always a choice, too.

i just scrape it in the trash. for doing dishes i put some orange zepp in and let it soak and that gets my plates super squeaky clean.

I have this same setup... dual sinks with 1 insinkerator. In 20 years
it has never clogged up although the motor finally died last year and I had to replace it. I always run LOTS of water when I use it though.

My mom's plumbing must have been janky, maybe it had just enough bends
    to slow the works down...

Insinkerator. heh - I replaced my disposal recently and looked around for the identical Insinkerator so I didn't have to change the sink collar.

I'm lazy that way, I'll spend an hour looking for an identical smoke
detector if I can re-use the mounting bracket. :)

According to various articles, the main reasons CEC has less outlets is COVID, large debt to creditors and shift in customer preferences, in
    that order.

We all realized the viral cesspools of death that are BALL PITS.

In all seriousness, it sounds like they got dragged down by private
equity - buying the company and leveraging debt.

And, for a 4-7 year old kid, being able to play games for a token a
piece and eat cheesy pizza while your dad watches from the sidelines was a pretty good way of spending a weekend afternoon - I found a couple of
games I was good at that I could supplant his coupon winnings, and he'd
be so excited getting to pick a prize at the end.

I just replaced mine last year... I think it was an Insinkerator IIRC.

i dont know why people like them. i've had them before but dont like them. i'm always dropping a fucking fork down the hole too.

heheh... I've never done that but I am waiting for my 14 yr old grandson to do it... that's right up his alley.

Yeah, it's tough to think about how bad the FDA, USDA, and whatever alphabet soup food administrations have slowly been trying to kill us
all over the years. It would definitely be nice if that changed, and
    soon!

They're not trying to kill us, the companies that lobby against them
are. Sure, they could sell healthier food, but where's the profit
    margin in that?
